Growing Challenge update – Hydroponic tomatoes
Nov 8th, 2009 by Tom

The hydroponic tomato is still going strong. The humidity started to drop now that it is getting colder and the heat in the house is on. It was down to 30%. I filled the humidifier I have and humidity is now up to 40% which I think should be decent.

Time to go after the poison sumac
Nov 7th, 2009 by Tom

A lot of the trees around my house have poison sumac vines growing up them.

Today the weather was in the high 30s so I thought I’d put on a jacket and try to fight these vines.

I’m not alergic to poison ivy or sumac yet so I went out there with a power saw and cut the vines from the roots. I’m hoping that by doing this it will kill off the top of the vine.

It is so easy to see the vines now that all the leaves have fallen.

I would advise against others using a power saw as even the sawdust from poison ivy and its relatives is enough to cause you break out if you are allergic.

At any rate, I think now is a good time to try to deal with some of these vines. Just look online for better ways to do it than I did because you can still have a reaction to poison ivy or sumac etc even if the plant looks dead/dormant. And sawdust just just asking for trouble.

Ripped out half of my hydroponic pumpkin plant
Nov 6th, 2009 by Tom

The spider mites came back and attacked the vegetation in the back of my “garden.” It was hard to spray it properly so they kind of took over that area.

I ended up cutting off all of that vegetation and thoroughly sprayed the rest of the plant. I’m hoping the plant will recover nicely like it did last time.

Growing Challenge update
Nov 1st, 2009 by Tom

Another week gone by and the hydroponic tomato plant is still doing well. Still no sign of flowers, but more and more leaves are growing.
