Status of things I’m trying to grow

Plant Status

Strawberry: All plants look dead. I think the experiment failed because the seeds couldn’t get through the tissue, and the original ones couldn’t handle the light when I removed leaves that shaded them.

Bell pepper: Previous plant’s fruit never looked quite right. My fourth try at a pepper plant was finally successful. Planted 10/12/2008 and harvested 1st fruit 01/30/2009. See menu for a link to the summary.

Squash: Died with no harvest-able fruit.

Hydroponic Cucumber: Started a new plant 4/11/2010. Plant flowered 5/18/2010. Started 2 plants 6/14/2008 and started harvesting 8/8/2008. See menu link for more info.

Hydroponic Watermelon: Started 3 bush sugar baby plants on 5/9/2010. 2 sprouted 5/18/2010. Started another one 7/5/2009 and harvested a 3″ fruit 11/21/09.

Hydroponic Zucchini: I was only able to harvest 1 fruit. The plant died. I planted two new plants and have harvested a fruit off of one of them on 04/28/09.

Carrots: The first batch I did grew okay for a few weeks but then just stopped growing.  None of the carrots survived from the second batch. One grew pretty big but died before it was edible.

Hydroponic Beans: I planted a few plants with some corn.  We got a few that we could eat.  The plant is now dead. Started a new group of plants which didn’t give  much fruit

Corn:  I planted 5 seeds and 3 of them grew into plants.  They all did pretty well.  The problem was that they all matured at different rates so I couldn’t really pollinate any of the ears.

Hydroponic Tomatoes: I planted some “Black from Tula” and after 111 days I was able to harvest some. After a few weeks of dormancy the plant flowered again and is producing more fruit.  Pictures are in the photo section. the plant was pulled early July 2009. Look for the posts for the Growing Challenge where I grow a tomato plant in hydro-culture.

Hydroponic Pumpkin: Started a hydroponic pumpkin 4/10/2010.
