56 days with a cucumber plant: From seed to first harvest
August 10th, 2008 by Tom

This page is a consolidation of all the images I took while growing a cucumber plant from seed. I am hoping that people will find it useful. When I am researching a plant, I often try to find images of a plant at a certain point during its growth but often have a lot of trouble finding the right image.

The plant is a straight 8 cucumber. Started on 6/14/2008 and harvesting the first fruit on 08/08/2008. The growing system is an Emily’s garden system. The lights I use are 1000W MH with a light cycle of 16 hours on, 8 off. I used General Hydroponics Flora Nova grow for my nutrient solution mixed at 1 teaspoon per gallon of water. Because the ph of my water seems to be around 3 (I’m not sure I believe that) I add about 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to increase the PH to about 6.

I was asked recently how I started my plants. Do I start them in dirt and transplant them or what. Well, I start the seeds in Rockwool cubes. After I see roots poping through I will then burry the cubes in my growing medium Hydroton Grow Rock.

Timeline
Day 1 – Planted seed
Day 3 – Seed sprouted
Day 7 – First true leaves emerge
Day 29 – Tendrils emerge
Day 33 – First male flower
Day 45 – First female flower
Day 56 – First fruit harvested

See Hydroponic cucumbers for the details.

Hi. Those look great. I am starting some miniature white cucumber seeds now for use with my NFT/DFT hydro system. My concern is that I am using an 8 bulb T5HO ballast for light, which I have read should be kept no more than 12″ above the tops of your plants. Some people even recommend 6″. How on earth would I grow a cucumber with such a low overhead light? I was going to try and coil it…

Yeah, it might be tough with that light but don’t give up hope. If you coil it it might work. Just experiment. Sometimes things work, sometimes they don’t, but don’t stress it too much and give it your best shot!
